The Bible provides numerous passages that discuss the humanity of Jesus Christ, emphasizing that while He is fully divine, He is also fully human. Here are some key aspects of Jesus’ humanity according to the Bible:
- Birth and Lineage: Jesus had human parents (Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-38, Galatians 3:3). He is descended from Abraham and David, fulfilling Jewish prophecies (Matthew 1:1; Luke 3:23-38).
- Jesus had a human body, soul, spirit:
- Body: “For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial” (Matthew 21:12).
- Soul: “Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour; but for this cause came I unto his hour” (John 12:27). “Then said he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me” (Matthew 26:38).
- Spirit: “And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, why reason ye these things in your hearts?” (Mark 2:8). “And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost” (Luke 23:46).
- He looked like a man:
- The Samaritan woman: “Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How it it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of mem which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans” (John 4:9).
- To the Jews: “Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet 50 years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?” (John 8:57).
- To Mary Magdalene: “Jesus saith unto her, woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away” (John 20:15).
- Jesus possessed flesh and blood (Hebrews 2:14).
- Jesus grew (Luke 2:46).
- Jesus asked questions (Luke 2:46).
- Jesus increased in wisdom (Luke 2:52).
- He was limited in knowledge, which was self-imposed to display his humility and total reliance on God… In Philippians 2:5-8, Christ voluntarily abstained, yet always retained certain divine attributes while on earth: “And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press and said, who touched my clothes?” (Mark 5:30). “And said, where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see” (John 11:34). “And seeing a fig tree afar having leaves, he mace, if haply he might find anything thereupon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet” (Mark 11:13). “But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father (Mark 13:32).
- Jesus Prayed (Mark 1:35, Luke 11:1)
- He was tempted (Matthew 4:1, Hebrews 2:18, 4:15)
- Jesus learned obedience (Hebrews 5:8)
- He was angered and grieved (Mark 3:5)
- He hungered “And when he had fasted 40 days and 40 nights, he was afterward ahungred” (Matthew 4:2) and (Matthew 21:18).
- He thirsted (John 4:7, John 19:28)
- He was weary (John 4:6)
- Jesus slept “And behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves; but he was asleep” (Matthew 8:24).
- Jesus loved “Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way sell whatsover thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me” (Mark 10:21)…
- Jesus had compassion: “But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were aboard, as sheep having no shepherd” (Matthew 9:36).
- He wept “Jesus wept” (John 11:35). “And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it” (Luke 19:41).
- Jesus experienced joy. “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the same, and is set down at the right of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2). “In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that O Father, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent and hast revealed them unto babes even so, Father; for for so it seemed good in thy sight” (Luke 10:21).
- He was troubled. (John 10:21, John 12:27, John 13:21, Mark 14:33, 34).
- Jesus suffered. (1 Peter 4:1)
- He bled (John 19:34)
- Jesus sweat drops as of blood (Luke 22:44).
- Jesus suffered and felt pain, ultimately experiencing death (Matthew 27:50; Mark 15:37; Luke 23:46; John 19:30).
- He was buried (Matthew 27:59, 60).
- Death and Resurrection: Jesus died a physical death and was buried (John 19:33-42). He physically rose from the dead, demonstrating His power over death and His promise of resurrection for believers (Matthew 28:5-7; Luke 24; John 20).
These aspects collectively illustrate that Jesus’ humanity is a fundamental part of Christian doctrine, showing that He fully shared in the human experience while also embodying divine nature. This dual nature of Jesus is central to Christian belief, as it affirms that He can fully relate to human struggles and act as an effective mediator between God and humanity.
